Hypnosis is a natural state and can also be described as a state of focused attention and all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. Hypnotherapy incorporates hypnosis for therapeutic purposes aiming with also eliciting any of those inaccessible or untapped resources of the client relying on the client's abilities, experiences, and resourcefulness to aid them further.

During the hypnotherapy process, you are not at all asleep, you are awake and can hear any positive therapeutic suggestions being spoken and you are in control of you at all times. The hypnotherapist is just a navigator and not the captain,  you may even choose to come out of hypnosis whenever you wish and that choice is always yours as you are always in control.

No, you certainly cannot become stuck in hypnosis during the hypnotherapy process, hypnosis is a very natural state, contrary to how the media or stage hypnosis has been known to portray the state of hypnosis, in fact:

  • You are not asleep at all, you are awake and can hear any positive therapeutic suggestions being spoken and you are in control of you at all times. The hypnotherapist is just a navigator and not the captain, you may even choose to come out of hypnosis whenever you wish, that choice is always yours as you are always in control.

No, you will not, you will always be in control throughout the hypnotherapy process, you also cannot be forced or made to do anything against your will or anything that conflicts with your ethics and values. The role of the hypnotherapist acts as more of a guide or navigator with being able to offer you positive therapeutic suggestions during the hypnosis process aiming with also eliciting any of those inaccessible or untapped resources to assist you to reach your desired outcome and as you are always in control you can pick and choose anything you would like to take on board or not, to aid your progress or outcome as you are always in control throughout the process.

The key difference is that Stage Hypnosis is Not Hypnotherapy.

  • Stage Hypnosis for entertainment purposes is generally performed in front of an audience where there is an active selection process undertaken by the hypnotist for finding participants that choose to be on stage and choose to participate with the stage hypnotist in front of the audience for entertainment purposes. Hence the myth is created that the stage hypnotist is in control.
  • Hypnosis is a natural state and can be described as a state of focused attention, additionally, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. Hypnotherapy incorporates the natural state of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes where the hypnotherapist navigates and provides positive therapeutic suggestions throughout the process aiming with also eliciting any of those inaccessible or untapped resources of the client relying on the client's abilities, experiences, and resourcefulness to aid their progress. During the process the client is not asleep, is always in control, can hear any positive therapeutic suggestions, and may decide to take on board anything they wish to or not to aid their outcomes, they may also transition out of the state of hypnosis anytime they wish. Some may describe the hypnotherapy process as an effective form of guided meditation.
